Owls and royal weddings

We go out for dinner with our favourite neighbours every 4-6 weeks.  When we booked in Friday night's dinner we didn't think about the royal wedding being that day.  Our dinner was at a little local restaurant in the next town and they had thrown themselves into the spirit of things.  The menu was a Royal Wedding Menu and they had set up a lovely little wedding display in one corner.  We don't usually make a late night of our get togethers but this time we headed home to watch our recording of the wedding (in fast forward).

On the way home we were treated to something we rarely see.  Just a couple of minutes from home, on a rural section of the road, I could see there was something on the edge of the road.  At first I thought it was something dropped from a car that the headlights were picking up but as we got closer it was taller than it was wide.  Much to our surprise there was an owl standing on the edge of the road!  When we lived in Melbourne we had a resident owl in the street and we'd occasionally see him sitting on the top of the stop sign just outside our house.  It's been years since I've seen an owl.

We continued on home and just metres from our driveway I spotted something sitting on the electricity cable.  I backed the car up and put the lights on high beam - it was a bird.  As we rolled a little closer we could identify it.  This time it was a tawny frogmouth. Click here to see what they look like.
