One of the things we looked forward to seeing was the Autumn colour. In Australia we have mostly eucalypts which are a grey green and don't lose their leaves.
We had one day where we drove across the Appalachian Mountains. It was an enormous day for us and we were on the road for more than 11 hours in terrible, terrible weather, catching the tail end of a hurricane like storm. It rained heavily most of the day, the traffic was heavy and visibility was poor. At one stage it was so bad that we just pulled of the highway and had a picnic lunch in the car. It turned out we'd chosen the carpark of a hardware store (once we could actually see where we were)!
But... we weren't disappointed as the trees in the Appalachian Mountains were in full colour - absolutely stunning.
